Why Standing Seam Steel Roofing?

Standing seam metal roofs (also knowns as Standing Seam Steel roofs) are defined by their vertically-oriented flat steel panels and concealed fasteners. These types of roofs are also described as having raised seams that rise above the level of each panel’s flat area. Standing seam systems can be used for either metal roofing, which is the most common, or metal walls.

Standing Seam Steel Distinguishing Features

A distinguishing feature with standing seam systems is that the systems’ fastener are hidden, whether the panels are attached to a roof deck using clips or whether the panels are directly fastened to the decking material under the vertical legs using fastener flanges.

A Proven Track Record

Demand for Standing Seam Steel Roofing is increasing in Southern California as home values rise and architectural preferences change. McCormack has decades of experience installing this material in both residential and commercial applications.

Clean, High-Quality, Modern Aesthetic

Standing seam steel roofs are becoming more and more popular in architectural applications because of their modern aesthetic. In addition to the sleek, straight lines offered by these panel systems, the metal panels can be coated in almost any color, including custom colors to match or compliment the structures which they cover.

Energy Efficiency

Standing seam steel roofing systems are often made with cool roofing coatings that have highly reflective pigments. This means these systems do an excellent job of reflecting the sun’s rays and dispelling the associated radiant heat that other roofing types may retain.

Allows For Thermal Movement

In standing seam metal roofing systems, the panels generally aren’t pinned, meaning they can expand and contract better than they would if affixed in a more traditional manner. When you restrict the expansion and contraction needed for proper thermal movement of a metal panel, you can run into problems, such as oil canning, fastener withdrawal, increased noise, and other issues.

Solar Mounting Options

One of the biggest advantages of standing seem steal roofs is the ability to mount items, such as solar panels, snow retention systems, swamp coolers, or other rooftop additions, without ever having to penetrate or make any holes in the surface of the roof.

Lifespan

Standing seam steel is one of the longest lasting roofing solutions.  These types of roofs can last of 50 years with very little maintenance.  They are not susceptible to catching fire, being torn off by wind, or being punctured by debris.  Further, since the fastener doesn’t go through the metal’s surface, regular maintenance to check for loosening or damaged fasteners is less frequent.

Standing Seam Steel Roofing Considerations

While Standing Seam Metal Roofs are great for many applications, you should be aware of some of the disadvantages they come with.

Higher Cost One of the most significant drawbacks to standing seam metal roofing is the fact that is can be more expensive when compared to other roofing types, including stone coated steel systems.
Requires Higher-Skilled Contractor For Installation There are very few roofing contractors capable of installing metal roof systems—whether standing seam steel or stone coated steel. McCormack has been specializing in the installation of metal roof systems for over 20 years.
Cannot Be Used On A Flat Roofing Structure Standing seam steel systems are not suitable for commercial buildings or homes that have a low slope. Flatter pitches do not allow water to adequately drain, which could lead to premature degradation, color changes, and the overall failure of the panel system.
Can Be Harder To Repair Or Replace If damage occurs with one panel or a smaller section of the roof, it can often be tough to replace that section of the roof efficiently because the damaged panel must be separated from the panels around it that are remaining on the structure. This process can be especially tedious for mechanically seamed systems, as each panel will need to be un-seamed and the sealant will also need to be removed.Tar and gravel roofs use multiple waterproof and fireproof layers of materials. Then, contractors use tar to sandwich all the layers together in a single, dense material. While tar and gravel provides superior UV ray protection, and great protection in wind storms, they also emit harmful noxious fumes which can actually delay building occupancy after a job is complete.
